First National Bank Supports Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Meet our very own inspirational employee, Cheryl Stevens, dedicated to helping others through sharing her personal experience with breast cancer.

Be a ‘live-er’ and celebrate something every day!

Cheryl Stevens was diagnosed over 9 ½ years ago with breast cancer. When she first learned of her diagnosis, she was devastated, but Cheryl was able to turn her journey into something positive. And not just for herself, but for many other cancer patients. A hat shower thrown for her by family and friends inspired Cheryl. “You put a silly hat on, and you have no choice but to laugh,” said Cheryl, who used the power of laughter to ease her own treatments and now uses the healing power of humor to help others. Cheryl founded Flamingos for Hope (Friends Laughing, Achieving Miracles, Inspiring and Nurturing Gifts, Offering Smiles) out of her desire to brighten the lives of those affected by cancer through inspiration, laughter and fun.

Once every month, Cheryl leads her Flamingos for Hope to the Methodist Estabrook Cancer Center where they bring energy and inspiration materialized in the form of treats, silly head wear, and smiles to patients who are still undergoing their cancer treatments. “I’m passionate about giving people that chance to have a warm fuzzy during their treatment,” said Cheryl. “It takes their minds off the cancer for a little bit, and it’s just very rewarding. It makes me happy.”

First National Bank is proud to support Cheryl Stevens and her Flamingos for Hope. First National Bank employees are creating fun themed hats this October for Cheryl and her Flamingos for Hope to distribute on their monthly visits to the center for the remainder of the year.
